Multiple Teams · Jay County Sectional Preview


The wrestling post-season kicks off this Saturday for the Jets at the Jay County Sectional. Wrestling begins at 8:30 and it the entry fee is $6. The top four places in each weight class will move on to the Jay County Regional next weekend.

 

Here is a quick preview for our participating wrestlers:

 

106: Dallas Schwaller (13-14) is participating as the 5th seed in a weight class that features South Adams Michael Rupp (23-5) as the number one seed and Bellmont’s DeAundre James (16-13) as the two seed. Schwaller will meet up with Jay County’s Dylan Racster for his first match in the quarterfinals. These wrestlers have already met twice this year with each wrestler coming away with a victory.

 

113: Logan Mosser (23-8) enters as the second seed in his weight class. State ranked Wyatt Miller (27-3) from South Adams comes in as the number one seed in this weight class. Logan and Wyatt have split their previous two matches this season. To get to the finals Logan will have to go through Jay County’s Zakk Atkins (16-9) and Miller will have to go through fourth seeded Gregg Shoaf (16-13) of Bellmont.

 

120: After coming away last weekend with a conference championship, Nick Liter (26-7) enters sectional competition as the number one seed for his weight class. Second seed Seth Fugiett (21-7) of Jay County and third seed Jed Perry (24-11) of Southern Wells look to advance to the finals from the other side of the bracket. Liter’s first match will be Matt Feasel (9-19) of Bluffton and should then be followed by fourth seed Kyle Lawson (16-13) of Bellmont or fifth seed Brandon Wynn (18-15) of South Adams for the right to wrestle for a sectional championship.

 

126: Freshman Cayden Shaffer (20-14) ended up a fourth seed in his bracket. He is joined in the top four by state ranked Jon Becker (22-7), second seed Kaimen Sanders (19-8) of Jay County, and fellow freshman Will Fiechter (29-7) as the third seed. Shaffer’s first match will be in the quarterfinals against Jeff Cline (24-10) of Union City.

 

132: Anthony Mosser (25-1) looks to add a sectional title to his already impressive senior season. He enters as the number one seed in his weight class. The four-time ACAC champion will most likely be facing the four seed, Bellmont’s John Ruble (17-11), in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket is number two seed Josh Beeks (26-6) of Southern Wells and third seed Briar Goodwin (25-5) of the Starfires.

 

138: One match away from the state meet last year, Logan Macklin (20-5) looks to make it down to Banker’s Life this season. Logan received the second seed in his weight class and will meet up with Cam Coleman (2-6) of Bluffton in the quarterfinals. Awaiting him on the other side of the bracket is the number one seed, Grant Gutierrez (23-6) of Bellmont.

 

145: Parker Bates (23-10) comes in as the third seed for this tournament. If he can get past Josh Lahr (15-14) from South Adams in the quarterfinals, he will most likely have a rematch with Bluffton’s Zach Mounsey (26-4) in the Semifinals. The winner of that match will go on to face Jay County’s talented freshman, and number one seed, Mason Winner (27-1).

 

152: Brant Thieme (21-11) will open up this tournament as a third seed. His first match will put him against Drake Deitsch (11-15) of South Adams. Theime’s major competition should come from second seed Matt Laughlin (22-9) of Bellmont and first seed Tyler Leonhard (29-4) from Jay County. Xavier Walden (21-12) of Southern Wells rounds out the top four seeds.

 

160: Monty Hill draws the fourth seed in the 160 pound weight class. The talented top two seeds Tony Busse (21-3) of Bellmont and Ivan Hemmelgarn (30-3) of Jay County are the favorites in this weight class. Hill will also have to contend with third seed Cam Harris (11-11) of Norwell and Colin Shaffer (8-9) of South Adams to punch his ticket to regionals.

 

170: Freshman Evan Snyder looks to bump up a weight class to take on the top four seeds for his chance at advancement. The top four seeds in this weight class include Bellmont’s state ranked Bryce Baumgartner (22-1), Cale Gray (11-11) of Norwell, Sam Smith (24-11) of Southern Wells, and Thomas Hemmelgarn (18-7) of Jay County. Snyder’s first match will be against second seed Gray.

 

182: No participant from Adams Central

 

195: All-State football player and first year wrestler Jantz Blackburn (20-14) enters a very talented weight class looking to advance to next week. Headling the weight class at the number one seed is Caleb Hankenson (30-1) of Bellmont. Second and Third seeds are Isaiah Baumgartner (28-4) of South Adams and Dylan McCune (19-6) of Norwell respectively. As the fifth seed, Jantz will wrestle fourth seed Melvin Hernandez (19-12) of Blackford for his first match of the day.

 

220: Nash Brunner (18-9) will start the day out as the third seed at 220. The former multiple time semi-state qualifier will face second seed Oliver Baronick (21-7) of Blackford in the Semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Jay County’s Gavin Hare (30-4) stands in the way Brunner’s sectional championship at first seed.

 

285: Another All-State Football player and first year wrestler for the Jets is second seed Brandon Schoeneman (12-5). With a full year under his belt, Brandon will be going up against third seed Starfire Tayler Cuellar (24-11) in the semifinals. If he can get past the third seed, Bellmont’s Braiden Shaw (26-5) will be waiting for him in the finals.
